It pays $2 an hour.

Across the ocean in San Francisco, a company announces a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. The system is described as “safe,” “aligned,” and “ethically trained.” Investors applaud. Headlines celebrate the arrival of machines that can see, understand, and reason.

No one mentions the man in Nairobi.

Or the thousands like him.

The Underground Layer

Artificial intelligence, as it is commonly marketed, appears almost mystical—an emergent intelligence rising from pure computation. But beneath the polished demos and keynote speeches lies something far more human, and far more uncomfortable.

Workers in the Global South—in countries like Kenya, India, and Philippines—are tasked with shaping the behavior of these systems. They review explicit, violent, and disturbing material so that you don’t have to see it.

They are, in effect, the immune system of A.I.

And like many immune systems, they absorb the damage quietly.

What the Machine Learns, They Must First Endure

To teach an A.I. what not to say, someone must first show it what exists.

That includes hate speech. That includes graphic violence. That includes sexually explicit content—often categorized, tagged, and described in clinical detail. Not because the workers are curious, but because the system requires precision. The machine must learn the boundaries.

So the worker becomes the boundary.

The training modules emphasize speed. Accuracy. Consistency.

They do not emphasize psychological recovery.

The Pay Gap No One Pitches

In pitch decks, A.I. companies speak in abstractions: “scalable intelligence,” “data pipelines,” “model alignment.”

Rarely do they include the line item that reads: human labor, outsourced, invisible.

A senior engineer in New York City might earn six figures refining a model’s output. Meanwhile, the worker who flagged the explicit content that trained that same model may earn less in a week than the engineer spends on dinner.

This is not an accident. It is a design.

Labor flows downward. Credit flows upward.

Because the inputs are messy.

A System That Knows Too Much, Except This

Ask an A.I. how it was trained, and you may receive a clean, technical answer: datasets, algorithms, optimization.

Ask the workers, and you will hear something else entirely.

The Cost of Clean Outputs

Back in Nairobi, the man at the desk finishes his shift. He closes his laptop, steps outside, and tries to leave the images behind.

Tomorrow, he will log in again.

The system will improve—slightly more accurate, slightly more refined.

And somewhere, someone will describe it as “self-learning.”

It is not.

It is learning through people you are not meant to see.
